A meeting honouring the life and work of Nelson Mandela will be held this December at the Palazzo Vecchio, one year after Mandela’s death. The announcement was made official on March 6 by deputy mayor Dario Nardella at the Palazzo Vecchio. The meeting was attended by South African ambassador Nomatemba Tambo, CEO of the Nelson Mandela Foundation Sello Hatang, the Honorary Consul of South Africa in Florence Richard Sarra and the Director of the Mandela Forum Massimo Gramingi.

‘We are very interested in the project and the activities of the Nelson Mandela Foundation,’ said Nardella, ‘and for this we would like to organize in Florence a great event in memory of Mandela in one of the cities of the world that granted him honours and honorary citizenship. The conference will be divided into several sections: one with students at the Mandela forum, in conjunction with the annual meeting of human rights, and the institutional meeting in Salone dei Cinquecento in the Palazzo Vecchio. We will work directly with the Region of Tuscany, the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Embassy of South Africa in order to host this event in the name of this great man, to promote his values.’

More details regarding the conference are expected to be released soon.
