Numerous organizations across Tuscany are working to
support international relief efforts for those affected by the massive
earthquake in Japan and resulting tsunami, some focusing on particular needs.
When Japanese authorities speaking with staff of the Italian Institute of
Culture in Japan noted the need for water, the Pistoia-based Amici di Groppoli
group responded. On April 22 and 23, the organization sponsored a collection of
natural mineral water for the Japanese population affected by the natural
disaster and damage to its nuclear plants.
The collection project, which counted among its
sponsors the city and province of Pistoia, reached its goal of collecting 25
tons of natural mineral water. The collected water will travel to Japan by ship
at a cost of about 1,200 euro.
Amici di Groppoli is also enlisting volunteer families
in Pistoia to host orphaned Japanese children from July 20 to September 5.
