The renowned gallery home to Michelangelo’s David is sees an exciting new exhibition curated by resident director Cecilie Hollberg. On display for the first time, all the bronze busts of Michelangelo attributed to Daniele da Volterra will be exhibited together, on loan from various international museums, including the Louvre, the Musée Jacquemart-André in Paris and the Ashmolean. The nine works were cast in the mid to late 16th century and their united display serves as an opportunity to compare the art’s aesthetic and technical elements.
International Mother Language Day is celebrated every February 21 to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism around the world. Beelingual and The Children’s Lending Library mark the occasion on Sunday, February 20 at the Giardino dell’Orticoltura in via Vittorio Emanuele II with mothers from various countries sharing stories about traditions, food, games and tongue-twisters from their native lands, as well as teaching children a few words in their language. Everyone is welcome.
Three exhibitions at MAD Murate Art District centre on Afro-descendant artists from February 10 through to April 2, 2022, curated in collaboration with Black History Month Florence. This year’s festival has been renamed Black History Fuori Le Mura, dedicated to Black culture in Italian contexts. The initiative was co-founded and directed by Justin Randolph Thompson, with Valentina Gensini directing events at MAD. Fuga (musical term for melodic theme introduced by one voice and taken up by others) was launched at the Murate Art district (piazza delle Murate) on February 10, the collective name for the three exhibitions and events programme. The theme for the edition is a meditation on the fugitivity of Blackness, and its blurring of the lines between the local and transnational. The works on show are Hazel, a double video projection by Kevin Jerome Everson, How other people’s bread tastes like salt, an autobiographical work by Nidhal Chamekh, and research work titled the Black Archive Alliance vol. IV by Jessica Sartiani as part of a three-year collaboration between MAD and BHMF. The inauguration also saw the presentation of a new audiovisual project by DeForrest Brown, Jr. and James titled Hoff Hobo Ufo V: (The new world), that examines the tumultuous geographical history of the migratory history of Afro-descendants in America. Come face to face with the Electress Palatine on the occasion of the anniversary of the death of Anna Maria Luisa de ‘Medici. Giaele Monaci dresses as the great Medici figure to share her story and historical context with Elisabetta Stumpo in the Sala dei Gigli of the Palazzo Vecchio Museum. There will be several occasions to meet the historical figure on Friday February 18 (3, 4 and 5pm) and Sunday February 20 (11am, 12pm and 1pm) On February 18, to celebrate the anniversary, the Florentine Civic Museums and Palazzo Medici Riccardi will be accessible to the public for free. The cinema hall at the 25hours hotel (piazza San Paolino) hosts a new screening series every Sunday at 4.30pm. The first month is free, with the programme dedicated to short films by local directors, preceded by a presentation from the director. This Sunday’s show is Breathe by Salvatore Vitiello.
Speakeasy Multilingual hosts a social meet up at Fonderia Gastro Bistrot from 1pm on February 19, with lunch, wine and chats where you can get to know more people in the community and practice languages. 15 euro for non-members, 13 euro for Speakeasy members.
