Dear Matteo Renzi,

We just wanted you to know how wonderful Florence looks. We have been coming here for years and love the city. The new garbage containers are very attractive. They certainly look better then the old ones. Every bit of cost is worth it. For such a beautiful city those old garbage containers were terrible.

Thank you, sir, for cleaning up our adopted home city.

Louis Capuano

Dear Mr. Capuano,

I was very pleased to receive your email. We are working hard to clean the city and the results are very positive indeed. In Florence the cost of waste disposal is among the lowest in Italy; separate trash collection and separation has reached 47%, which becomes 65% with the new underground containers around the city and a massive 78% with the new San Jacopino ecological stations.

Florence is the top metropolitan area in Italy for this. With the opening of new underground containers in via Forlanini, Campo di Marte and along the ring roads we hope to cut our target by 50%. We have already reached our goal regarding the coverage of the Sweepy jet service, which allows us to clean streets without having to move cars: when we launched it people said it was impossible, now it covers 50% of the city. Separate trash collection and separation, cycle paths, zero volume (no new construction), pedestrianized areas and a vision of the city: Florence is forever greener.

We look forward to welcoming you back to Florence.

Sincerely, Matteo Renzi
