SCIENCE/ Bright-Night 2020

November 27-28

Recent research made available

The annual scientific celebration is back, this time in a virtual format. Free screenings will be available via the Più Compagnia platform, as the European Night of Researchers brings us highlights such as the award-winning documentaries on sustainability, Anthropocene and A world in danger. Created by the EU Commission in 2005, the events seek to bring astounding research to a wider audience. Here, the initiatives are promoted by the University of Florence in collaboration with many cultural and research bodies as well as the Tuscan Regional Council. 3 minute long talks on a variety of scientific, environmental and cultural issues form a competition amongst researchers, and also offer an opportunity for viewers to learn about a wide range of topics. The full programme is available here

CINEMA/ River to River Florence Indian Film Festival

December 3-8

Manmarziyan, released internationally as Husband Material, directed by Anurag Kashyap

Celebrating its 20th year, the River to River Florence Indian Film Festival was created as the first festival in the world, outside of its home country, entirely dedicated to films from and about India. Showcasing a 360-degree vision of India, this year the events take a digital format, granting us the opportunity to explore a different cultural landscape from the comfort of our own homes. The star-studded line-up of (virtual) guests includes activist Tara Gandhi Bhattacharjee, Mahatma Gandhi’s granddaughter. With films subtitled in both English and Italian, the programme is streamable all over Italy, with many of the films also available outside of Europe. The Facebook and YouTube events will be freely available to all and will feature live Q&As with the festival guests. Among the highlights will be meetings with Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan and director Deepa Mehta. The film line-up pays homage to Irrfan Khan who passed away recently, and there will also be a showing of the animated short film titled ‘Photograph’ by Indian illustrator Ashutosh Pathak that explores social life in India over the course of the pandemic. Access to the entire programme costs 9.90 euro, and tickets can be purchased here
