Florence has made the A list of cities that are demonstrating major progress in the fight against climate change.

The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) runs a system for investors, companies, cities, states and regions to manage their environment reporting. This is the first time that Florence has been included on the list, joining Turin as the only other Italian city to have set ambitious targets and made practical plans since the signing of the Paris Agreement in 2016.

“We are proud of what we’ve done and what we’re planning to make the city greener and more sustainable,” commented Dario Nardella, Mayor of Florence. “We are convinced that the time is now, in a world tormented by the pandemic, to make brave and far-sighted decisions about the climate and environment.”

The City of Florence’s projects include planting 20,000 trees by 2023, completing the tram system, increasing recycling, introducing car and bike sharing and electric mobility, encouraging alternative transport such as the new route announced between Florence and Prato, and implementing environment-related apps.

Only 88 cities feature on the Carbon Disclosure Project Cities A List. Other European cities to make the cut include Paris, Athens and Berlin.
