Behind the scenes: Hershey Felder’s George Gershwin Alone

Walking down the central aisle and up the burgundy red felt steps onto the historic boards of Florence’s oldest theatre, Teatro della Pergola, stirred surreal feelings in these dark times devoid of live indoor performances.

But Hershey Felder, Canada born to European parents and with a decidedly European heart, has developed an antidote, a revolutionary way to bring the finest theatre, music and acting to our homes, wherever we are in the world.

This week (September 1-4), the actor, producer, pianist and performer is rehearsing scenes for his upcoming one-man show, George Gershwin Alone, which will be broadcast live from this theatre in Florence on September 13 for his dedicated North American audience. Europeans won’t miss out on the extravaganza as the show can be watched on demand for a week after the live transmission.

Hershey Felder as George Gershwin Alone has played over 3,000 performances seen by over two million people from Los Angeles to Broadway to the UK, and has been celebrated by the public and critics. Directed by Stefano de Carli and Felder, Hershey Felder as George Gershwin Alone tells the story of America’s great composer, who with the groundbreaking “A Rhapsody in Blue, made a “Lady out of Jazz.” For the first time, Hershey Felder will bring George Gershwin to life on the stage of one of Europe’s oldest and most famous theatres, Teatro della Pergola, which was built in 1656 shortly after the invention of opera in Florence.
