Fan Quingduo – Oasis
An online photographic exhibition hosted by Manifattura Tabacchi and curated by the Master in Arts Management of IED (European Institute of Design in Florence), organized in collaboration with the Palazzo Strozzi Foundation, features contemporary works created by 13 young international artists selected from the most noted art schools in Florence. Two live performances will be held on the Instagram channel @at_the_edge_of_chaos. Drawing inspiration from Tomás Saraceno’s works, this all-digital format sees the emergence of art removed from traditional physical space, and placed in virtual reality where new meanings are acquired. The title of the exhibition project, At the Edge of Chaos, is inspired by Andrea Ferrara, professor of cosmology at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa, according to whom “complex systems are located between order and disorder, or at the limits of chaos”. The opening of the exhibition will be at 12pm, June 18, live on the Facebook pages of the Palazzo Strozzi Foundation, Manifattura Tabacchi and IED Firenze. Colourful range of events
A rainbow of activities fills the first weekend of the summer from June 19 to 21. The eighth edition sees events take place in Florence, Pisa, Arezzo and Marina di Pietrasanta, kicking off the season in high gear. This year, the focus is on slow and nature-based tourism, with events such as a boat sails along the coast of Pisa following a picturesque toast at the Leaning Tower. Drinks, dinners, guided tours and performances are all to be expected as tourism takes off again in Tuscany. All detailed here.

Film fills the tranquil space
Spazio Alfieri takes to the cloister of Santa Maria Novella to embark on a summer-long cinema series. 9.30pm is the start time, with tickets purchasable onsite or online. 200 seats are set up in front of the eight-by-six metre screen stretched among the 14th-century architecture. Film critic Claudio Carabba is behind the choice of films, varying from well-known classics to newer releases. Admission is 7 euro, or 6 euro for Coop members.

June 18 at 9pm sees some of the best musical numbers from the big screen performed by the Orchestra da Camera Fiorentina. Conducted by Giuseppe Lanzetta, the set list features Ennio Morricone’s most-loved scores, performed in the Auditorium Santa Stefano Al Ponte.

Traditional costumes in honor of the patron saint of the city
This year, ‘San Giovanni X 3’ replaces the city’s usual June 24 celebrations. Jointly organized by Florence, Genoa and Turin, who share a patron saint in San Giovanni, St John the Baptist, events will include a light display (instead of the traditional fireworks). The Bardini Museum, the Novecento Museum and the Museum of the Palazzo Vecchio will all offer free entrance and singer-songwriter Irene Grandi will perform in the Palazzo Vecchio’s Salone dei Cinquecento. Online community events hosted by The Florentine
The Florentine‘s online series of events, TF Together, continues with an ever-evolving line-up. This week sees art historian Allison Levy speak about her latest book, House of Secrets: The Many Lives of a Florentine Palazzo, focusing on the remarkable Palazzo Rucellai on Friday, June 19 at 5pm. The managing director of Villa Medicea di Lilliano, Eric Veroliemeulen, chats about the joys of vacationing at a Medici villa with a Duomo view at 5pm on June 24, and Paola Vojnovic presents a talk on the extraordinary and little known history of Renaissance portrait medals at 5pm on Thursday June 25.
