DANCE/ Florence Dance Festival: Swan Lake

9.30pm, August 3

Russian State Ballet

Three act ballet of Tchaikovsky’s famous ballet with choreography by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov. The Russian State Ballet have been around since 1978 and they bring some of their best dancers, Polina Filippova and Dmitry Vladimirov, to the Chiostro Grande of the Santa Maria Novella church. Swan Lake was Tchaikovsky’s first ballet, loosely based on the German fairy tale, The Stolen Veil, by Johann Karl August Musäus, it tells the story of a prince and an eternally damned creature, a virgin swan. This version is a typical representation of Russian ballet, tinged with melancholy, the Odette/Odile character, or black and white swan, is the physical and visual representation of good vs evil.

SHOW/ Sacred Wizard meets Wagner

10pm, August 3

Mago Santo at Ex-psychiatric hospital San Salvi

A Wagnerian show without Wagner’s music… It’s not a concert, it’s not theatre, it’s a “happening”, a wonderful manifestation of Wagner performed by Ivo Minuti and Alice Chiari as the Mago Santo or Sacred Wizard. Chille de la Balanza at San Salvi is always weird and wonderful and the shows and performances are rarely low impact. The advice issued is that if you’re looking for light entertainment, go elsewhere. Either way, the ex-psychiatric hospital’s grounds are pleasant, cooler than the rest of the city and an all-round nice place to spend a fine summer’s evening. Free entry but donations are welcome.

ONGOING/ AION. Louise Manzon at the Museo Marino Marini

Until September 8 2019

Louise Manzon

An array of Louise Manzon’s sculptures and installations are on show at the Museo Marino Marini as part of the exhibition AION. AION represents eternity, a space with no beginning and no end and the sculptures are indicative of the migratory tendencies of humanity and the differences we find in our society. Sculptures made from “poor” materials like iron wires, ceramics and distressed metals represent feminine archetypes while communicating women’s capacity and ability to bring life as well as their centuries-old battle within society and religion.
