SPECIAL EVENT/ Being Leonardo da Vinci, Aperitivo and Film

Winner of numerous international awards and inspired by an imaginary interview with the genius, the short film tells the true story of Leonardo da Vinci in the year of the 500th anniversary of his death. At 7pm, an aperitivo with a selection of red and white wines and typical Tuscan products kicks off the evening before the film starts. Finazzer Flory gives viewers a captivating, unforgettable look into what makes and shapes the mind of a legend. The story tells the tale of two journalists from opposite corners of the globe who meet in Clos Lucé, Ambroise, France where da Vinci is buried. They meet an almost-imaginary da Vinci and explore key themes of the master’s work like truth, spirituality and ethics.

The Aperitivo + Film package is provided by Destination Florence and is available at destinationflorence.com, starting from €25.

SPECIAL EVENT/ The Gnomon at Florence’s Duomo

12.30pm – 1.30pm, June 14, 18, 21

(The June 18 event has been cancelled due to film director Franco Zeffirelli’s funeral)

Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral

Each year in June, Florence’s Cathedral hosts a unique demonstration of the powerful precision of nature; the passage of the midday sun through a gnomon that sits in the dome above the Cathedral floor. Placed in the windowed lantern at the top of the dome, 90-metres above the ground, each year around the summer solstice, when the sun is at its highest point in the sky, light hits the gnomon and is projected along the meridian line running across the floor of the Chapel of the Cross and onto the inlaid circle that matches it perfectly in size. One of the oldest Gnomons in the world, originally installed in 1475 by Florentine mathematician Paolo Toscanelli before being replaced in 1756 by the one we see today, don’t miss the solstice moment by booking at eventi@operaduomo.firenze.it.
