Marble capital Carrara will soon open a new museum dedicated to one of the medium’s masters, Michelangelo. The Carrara and Michelangelo Museum (CARMI) will be inaugurated in the recently restored rooms of Villa Fabbricotti on June 2, 2018.
The new museum space is the work of Associazione MetaMorfosi, in collaboration with Casa Buonarroti, and is part of a broader redevelopment project, ongoing since 2011 and financed by the Tuscan Region, focused on the 19th century building and the surrounding Padula Park.

The spacious complex dedicated to the Renaissance master is split across three levels: on the main floor, a permanent exhibit focuses on the visceral and complex relationship between the artist, Carrara and marble. Visitors will be introduced to this theme through various artefacts and loans from the Province of Massa Carrara, the Academy of Fine Arts of Carrara and the Massa State Archive. Six rooms on this level feature videos, photographs, historical documents, life-size reproductions and even holograms of some of Michelangelo’s most notable works—David included.
The ground floor is designed to host temporary exhibitions and also has an in-depth section on the history of the building and the Fabbricotti family. On the basement level are didactic spaces and a café, as well as two cinema rooms. Once the museum has opened, the cinema will show Andrei Konchalovsky’s Il Peccato and Sky’s Michelangelo – Infinito, and will exhibit supporting materials from each production.
