Work has been underway, day and night, to rebuild the road along the Arno, which collapsed due to a burst water pipe on May 25.

The situation became clear during a recent inspection by Florence mayor Dario Nardella and engineer Davide Trevisani, vice president of the Trevi Group, the company in charge of the rejuvenation project. However, the lungarno will be made secure against the threat of winter flooding by November. Nardella: “The most important thing is that the lungarno is secure. We have to be ready for high water.”

An investigation is ongoing into establishing responsibility for the 200-metre-long sinkhole.
