Pisa’s Parco di San Rossore is offering a unique experience this summer as it transforms one of its cornfields into a temporary labyrinth. Every afternoon (except Monday) until the October harvest, you can get lost (and found again) in a sea of ripening wheat shafts, winding your way through this complex natural network.
The field in question usually acts as pasture for Tenuta’s native cattle breeds—the Maremmana, the Chianina and the Mucco Pisano—but now the Parco di San Rossore has decided to turn it into a public amusement park for this short time. The maize maze, 100% organic, is one of the first of its kind in Italy, and is hoped to promote appreciation of the countryside.
An area of over 10 hectares and a path of over 2.6km are given over to this giant labyrinth, where prizes can be won throughout by answering ecology-related questions. The park’s director Andrea Gennai hopes that visitors, as well as enjoying themselves, will come away with a better understanding of Tenuta di San Rossore’s sustainability policies.
