Nonprofit organization Friends of Florence has opened up applications for the third Friends of Florence Grant, organized in collaboration with Istur-CHT, the administrative secretariat of the Florence Art and Restoration Fair. The grant is a 20 thousand euro cash prize (VAT included) to be put toward restoration or conservation of Florentine artworks. The deadline for entering the competition is May 31, 2016.

This year, in keeping with the 50th anniversary commemorations of the Florence flood, the grant will go toward an artwork that fits one or more of the following criteria: works that have been damaged by natural disasters (floods, earthquakes, etc.); works damaged by human actions (vandalism, acts of terrorism, etc); works from Florentine sites that have become symbols of natural disasters; and works of art from places that have been impacted by human actions (vandalism, acts of terrorism, environmental disasters, etc.) To be considered for the grant, artworks in question must be visible to the public or become so immediately following their restoration.

Artworks in a variety of media and materials (fresco, wood, pottery, textile, bronze and metals, paper, etc.) may be submitted for candidacy. Applications must be submitted by individual professionals or firms with documented experience working with the Sorprintendenze. A panel of judges will select the winner, to be announced at the Salone dell’arte e del Restauro di Firenze in November. Registration forms are available here.
