WHAT: SLOW TRAVEL FESTWHERE: HISTORIC CENTER OF MONTERIGGIONI + ABBADIA A ISOLA + ALONG THE VIA FRANCIGENA

WHEN: 9–10–11 OCTOBER

Celebrate ‘pilgrimage with purpose’ this weekend with the Slow Travel Fest, centred in Monteriggioni but moving along the Tuscan portion of the via Francigena. The culture of ‘slow travel’ can cover a range of practices and ideas, but the festival’s artistic director Giancarlo Brunelli described the concept as rooted in encountering: encountering new people, often by chance; encountering previously unknown places; or even encountering new dimensions of oneself. Many different speakers and hike leaders in the festival lineup will take this same introspective approach. Kicking off with a group hike from Monteriggioni to the medieval hamlet of Abbadia a Isola, the festival includes excursions by foot and bike, concerts, film screenings and lectures from Italian and international guests.

For the kidsTake the whole family along: little ones will love the donkey rides on October 10 and 11 and a fun scavenger hunt on the festival’s closing day.

Where to sleepSee special room rates for festival attendees.
