You separate your trash, try to save water and try to shop secondhand, but if you want to introduce even more eco-friendly habits into your routine, download the new app greenApes.

Launched by a Florentine startup, greenApes is a social media platform where users around the globe can collaborate on sustainable living strategies, build their own ‘eco profiles’ and take inspiration from other users’ practices. Grow your visibility enough and you just might become a ‘green living’ ambassador.

As you incorporate new eco-friendly habits into your daily life, you gradually accumulate points, which can be redeemed for discounts, special offers and gifts at the app’s partner venues. Locally, you can cash in at Lo Sverso in via Panicale, and more places will be added down the line.

greenApes’ cutesy aesthetic, cool community and game-like feel belie the fact that, at its core, it’s a serious platform, breaking down complex environmental issues by focusing on small daily choices. But what sets the app apart is its emphasis on how changing our choices and lifestyle can be fun.

Founded by a team of sustainability experts, the app has received backing from the European Union and the Comune di Firenze, as well as various research centres and NGOs who supervised the scientific content of the app. It’s even received the seal of approval from Italy’s President of the Republic, winning the 2014 Sustainable Development Award.

The app is built to be completely inclusive, with versions for iPhone, Android, and Web, and has all the marks of a major social media platform: members can upload photos and statuses of their eco-friendly activities, send direct messages to other ‘Apes’, post eco-questions to the community and engage in competitions with other members. With its ‘nutty points,’ Ape rankings and geolocation options to find sustainable venues nearby, the app makes going green a social endeavor. See you all in the jungle!
