Now you can see Florence through a child’s eye with the new app, Family Tour. The City of Florence, the MUS.E association and the Istituto degli Innocenti produced the app with D’Uva Workshop to enable families to experience and explore the city without the rules and restrictions of museums.

The app is aimed at children and early teens between the ages of six to nine and ten to fifteen, offering interactive information on historical figures and monuments in the city. It concentrates on two time periods in Florence: the city’s Roman past and its period under the rule of the Medici family. The app takes families through major monuments and places that pertain to the particular historical period, offering a tour of the city’s “open-air museums.”

The app is paired with a kit that can be picked up at information points at the Palazzo Vecchio and at the Istituto degli Innocenti. The kit contains maps, information and games to encourage kids to explore and navigate the city for themselves, with the help of their parents. Kits can be rented for free for up to three hours.

The app is currently only available for Android users on Google Play but should be open to Apple’s App Store as well by mid June. It offers both Italian and English versions with Spanish and French translations coming soon.
