From May 28 to June 3, Florence will host some of the world’s premier jewelry designers for Preziosa – Florence Jewellery Week. The event will consist of shows, meetings, lectures, performances and workshops by well-known international jewelry artists, designers, historians, and curators.

In addition to the already acclaimed professionals, the five winners of the Preziosa Young 2015 competition will present their work alongside established artists.

The theme of the week is “Connecting Worlds: Identity/Culture” and it brings designers together from Europe, China, Russia, Africa and India. There will be exhibits focusing especially on the cultural aspects of jewelry. Especially in Africa and India, craftsmanship still represents fundamental aspects of societal life like family, social status, religious and secular celebrations, and the materials and processes of creation remain virtually unchanged.

It also celebrates Florence as a jewelry center, highlighting more storied Florentine jewelry workshops and showcasing major Florentine jewelers.

Le Arti Orafe (LAO) Jewelry School, whose main campus in Florence, sponsors the event. LAO was the first jewelry school in Italy to focus on gold work and this year celebrates its 30th anniversary.
