Today’s fashion is all about accessories. Style is going in a simpler direction, so the pieces we choose to complete our look make all the difference.

Here are a few must-haves for fall. Bags are tiny: clutches, small crossbody or mini shoulder bags are in. Along with more standard purses, add easy, chic backpacks to your bag rotation. You can’t go wrong with classic blacks and browns, along with trendier reds, ranging from bright Valentino-red to dark bordeaux tones. Pinks, purples and fancy greens are also on trend.

All the ladies struggling on Florence’s uneven cobbled streets will celebrate flats finally making a fashionable comeback. The style is decidedly menswear-inspired with a touch of ‘dandy’—laced-up looks, slippers and combat boots with big platforms are the ones to get. A girl needs her heels, too, though: opt for flirty, pointy stilettos in black or dramatic red.

Being in Italy, and particularly in Florence, there’s no excuse not to experiment with scarves, gloves and belts. Play with fun, colorful costume jewelry pieces over simple necklaces.

This fall, small statement pieces like these will add a touch of feminine flair to the season’s more minimalist aesthetic.

As you plan where you’ll shop for these statement pieces this season, I’d encourage you to take a look at a new charitable initiative created and curated by actress Rosario Dawson. I was fortunate to meet her in Milan at the Vogue New Talents venue, where I saw the spring ’15 ‘Fashion Rising’ collection by studiooneeightynine.com. This project helps create opportunities for African female artisans by marketing their handmade pieces. Fabulous fashion for a fantastic cause: what more can you ask for? Check them out!
