Serie A: Fiorentina 0 – 0 Inter

Fiorentina and Inter played to an entertaining
0-0 draw on October 29, before a near capacity crowd in Florence’s Franchi
stadium. The Viola, who were without their two top scorers, Gilardino and Mutu,
had the better of the play, but neither side was able to find the breakthrough
in this highly tactical encounter. The most crucial moment of the match came at
the end of the first half, when Pasqual fired a free-kick from the top of the
box, forcing Julio Cesar into an acrobatic save. With the rebound loose in the
area, Pazzini appeared to be held back by Inter defender Cordoba as he made an
attempt to play the ball; however no penalty was given and controversy ensued.
Despite this, Prandelli commented that the result was a fair one.

Serie A: Siena 1 – 0  Fiorentina

Fiorentina lost 1-0 to Siena in the disappointing
Tuscan derby on November 2. For the second straight match, the Viola failed to
find the net, highlighting their reliance on striker Alberto Gilardino, who was
serving the second of a two-match ban he received for his handball goal against
Palermo on October 26. Without Riccardo Montolivo in midfield, the Viola
appeared to lack creativity, while AC Siena seemed well organized defensively
and quick on the counter, with Massimo Maccarone testing the Fiorentina defense
on more than one occasion. Frey was performing impressively throughout the
match until caught off guard by Siena’s Houssine Kharja, who rose unmarked to
head in a Siena corner kick with 15 minutes remaining in the game.

Champions League: Fiorentina 1 – 1 Bayern

Despite putting together arguably their most complete
performance to date this season, Fiorentina failed, once again, to beat Bayern
Munich in their latest Champions League match on November 5. The Viola came out
of the gates flying to take home this must-win encounter, and just 10 minutes
into the match, Adrian Mutu sensationally connected with Zauri’s cross,
hammering the ball into the Bayern goal. Bayern finally came to life midway
through the second half and Tim Borowski scored an equalizer with just 12
minutes remaining. The game finished in a 1-1 draw. The Viola’s disappointment
worsened after Lyon’s victory over Steaua Bucharest, which leaves the
Fiorentina needing all but a miracle to pass the group stage.

Serie A: Fiorentina 2 – 1 Atalanta

Fiorentina put disappointment behind them after
beating Atalanta 2-1 on November 9 in Florence. Just 20 minutes into the game,
Felipe Melo scored his first goal since joining Fiorentina this past summer.
Atalanta hardly had time to blink before it was 2-0 for Viola, thanks to a
determined Gilardino. Fiorentina continued to pile on the pressure for the remainder
of the first half but failed to add to their advantage. With 15 minutes
remaining, Atalanta was awarded a rather dubious penalty, which was converted
into a goal by Sergio Floccari. Despite the goal, it was Fiorentina who
dominated the final minutes of the match and came away the winners.
