Five hundred packages of meat products worth 13 thousand euros were sequestered last week by the Italian food and drug safety agency NAS due to twelve infractions of new health regulations. All violations were regarding the correct application of the new labelling criteria, mandatory in Italy since the middle of October. In Prato, NAS also sequestered a truck with 2,300 kilograms of rancid meat and rotting fish. Over the last month, the agency has carried out over 50 inspections in Prato, Florence, and Campi, and it has discovered clandestine deposits of foods imported from China (including the so-called “black chicken”). The total value of goods sequestered amounts to a million euros. Thirteen people have been charged and four businesses have closed. Last week, throughout Tuscany, serological tests were carried out in rural chicken farms to prevent an outbreak of the chicken virus.
