Last Days

Smells like teen spirit? Maybe not. In the same way that Gus
va Sants movie Elephant was and was not about Columbine, so his Last Days is
and is not about late Nirvana frontman and rock icon Kurt Cobain. With his now
characteristic doubling-back on itself spiral narrative, van Sant tracks the
troubled descent into nirvana oblivion of Blake (Michael Pitt) with the
glamorized existential squalor you would expect of art-house rock star
hagiography: trashy imagery, moments of startling visual beauty, etc, but
surprisingly little music. Won the prize for sound at Cannes this year.
